Quonset House FAQ

There are a lot of details to consider with a house, but here are some common questions we get about them.

Are Quonset Hut Homes Safe?

Just think about it. What sounds safer to you, a house made of wood or one made of metal? Wood is susceptible to rotting after some time. Concrete homes are better, but in the places where earthquakes are frequent, they become killers. Compared to that, steel is a much better alternative. It is inorganic so that it won’t rot. In the case of an earthquake, even if the home falls, it won’t hurt its occupants too much. It also won’t provide a perfect home to termites, pests, and critters that might be crawling everywhere.

Another thing to be appreciated about Quonset homes is that they are flame resistant. Your house can catch fire for many reasons, faulty electrical wiring, lightning strike, or just plain coincidences. But Quonset homes won’t catch fires, so that you can rest assured.

What Sizes are Available?

Are they an Affordable Housing Option?

Affording a house these days can seem daunting. Housing prices have continued to rise leaving people looking for alternatives. Most people still don’t have proper-paying jobs, so thinking about getting a house seems absurd. But Quonset homes are affordable due to decreased requirement of construction materials. There is also the fact that you don’t need to lay an extensive foundation work, which reduces the price significantly. On top of that, there is a reduced maintenance fee, longer life, and insurance costs, and you have got yourself a sweet deal.

How do You Build a Quonset House?

It does not take long to build Quonset homes due to the prefabrication of your arch panels.

Something to keep in mind however is that a quonset provider is only manufacturing the exterior arches. Interior finishings are up to your imagination. The good news is that since the arches are self-supporting, you don't need to worry about load-bearing interior walls and could go entirely open-concept.

Like we said earlier, Quonset huts are made of steel arches that are precut and drilled at the factory. All that is left to do is to assemble everything on the site. This is easy enough even for a person who does not have a lot of experience. You can even treat it as a DIY project.

This video shows the process of assembling and bolting together the arches of a quonset.

What are the Benefits of a Quonset Home?

A Home that Fits Your Family

Regardless of whether you're looking for a one-person house or a family home for 6 children. Quonsets are custom-sized for whatever your needs may be. Choose a width from 16' to 50' plus, and essentially any length.

Easier Construction

These buildings have one of the simplest forms of construction. Arch panels are factory-cut and drilled. Once your foundation is poured, the main tool to assemble them is a basic wrench and no special skills are needed. Then the interior can be framed and finished.

Affordable Housing Alternative

The beauty of Quonset hut homes is it's a blank canvas for you to work with. If you're looking for an affordable housing option then it's entirely possible to create one for under $10k. If you have a large budget and want to customize a 60-foot wide building with a million-dollar interior, you can. Request a quote for your size of building to learn more.

Are they Good for Remote Locations?

Some people prefer the quiet, or maybe they want an open space where their family can live without the fear of their privacy being intruded. Hence, they choose remote locations for their homes. But the problem with that is that it is very difficult to bring all the materials and construction workers to the construction site. It will be, in simple words, a headache. But with Quonset steel homes, the structure has to be supplied to the location, where you can assemble it yourself or hire someone else to do it.

Quonset Hut Home Profiles

The earliest quonsets came in a basic semi-circle shape. These days you can choose a quonset in a variety of different profiles to fit your space and aesthetic preferences. The most common shapes are:

A / P Model

This style of quonset offers the most traditional home-look with straight vertical walls and an angled roofline which comes to a peak. It's one of the most common housing choices for that reason but is slightly more expensive than some others.

S Model

The S Model is quickly becoming the most popular style of choice for quonset hut home builders. It's vertical walls offer much more useable space than with a pure-curve, and you still get the style benefits of an arched quonset style roof.

Q Model

When it comes to quonset styling, the Q is king (or queen). This profile is the original style for quonset buildings and resembles a semi-circle. It offers the most affordable cost per square foot, but you may find less useable space right by the angled walls.

R Model

Sometimes all you need is a roof and that's exactly what the R Model provides. It allows you to build the walls of your house out of traditional brick or wood framing. The arch-style roofing system then sits on top to provide a steel-strong, low maintenance roof with minimal clearance (perfect for skylights).

X Model

While not the most popular housing option, X Models are closer to a traditional look than a standard arch. The slight outward slope of the side-walls allows for much more strength in high snowload areas than an A or S Model do.

T Model

The T model of quonset is essentially a lean-to since it butts up against a pre-built wall or structure. This can make it a good solution for someone who wants to have an exterior wall with a large number of windows, or if you're looking to add an addition onto your existing home.
